Turning the Page: Growth Through Life's Transitions
"Life transitions can be joyful, painful, hopeful, and frightening — sometimes all at once."
I was an avid reader growing up. I devoured books, and the longer they were, the better. I moved enthusiastically from chapter to chapter, turning one page after another, always excited to discover what came next. In a book, the transition between chapters often felt seamless. One ended, another began, and the story continued.
Real life does not always unfold quite so neatly.
Some new chapters arrive with excitement and are embraced wholeheartedly. Others are met with fear, uncertainty, and trepidation. Sometimes we know exactly where we are headed, and sometimes we stand at the edge of change without any idea what the next pages will hold.
I have stood at the doorway of many new chapters in my own life. Some have brought tremendous joy, including graduations, meaningful careers, marriage, raising a family, and watching my children grow into lives of their own. Other chapters have carried disappointment, grief, and the profound loss of parents and life expectations. Each transition has changed me in some way, teaching me about resilience, vulnerability, hope, and the importance of allowing ourselves to grow through both joy and sorrow.
Today, I find myself standing at the doorway of another new chapter as I embark on the journey of building my own business. There is fear in taking this step. There are unanswered questions, moments of self-doubt, and the vulnerability that comes with creating something deeply personal. There is also so much joy, gratitude, and excitement in pursuing work that feels meaningful to me.
One of the most important things I have learned is that I am not entering this chapter alone.
Throughout my life, I have been lifted by the support of friends, family members, colleagues, and mentors who have encouraged me, guided me, challenged me, and believed in me along the way. Even now, I continue to seek help, ask questions, and lean on the wisdom and care of others.
Unlike the chapters of a book, whose pages I once turned alone, the chapters of real life often require connection. We remain connected to the joys and struggles of our past, to the people who walk beside us in the present, and to those who remind us of our strength when we struggle to see it ourselves.
Sometimes that support comes from family and close friends. Other times, it comes from mentors, community, or professional support from someone who cares about our well-being and can help us make sense of where we have been and where we hope to go.
Life transitions can be joyful, painful, hopeful, and frightening, sometimes all at once. We may not always feel ready to turn the page, and we may not know exactly what the next chapter will bring. But we do not have to face it alone. With reflection, courage, and connection, each new chapter can become an opportunity to grow, heal, and move forward.
